David beckham academy legends tournament
DAVID BECKHAM might have missed out on his 100th England cap this time round but if he fancies a game he could always take part in a tournament at his own soccer school.
The David Beckham Academy, in North Greenwich, is hosting a legends tournament on Wednesday, March 19.
The likes of ex-Chelsea and England striker Kerry Dixon and former Arsenal favourite Ray Parlour are taking part, and Canary Wharf companies are being invited to enter.
The winning team will get the chance to play against some big stars from yesteryear.Other players in the Legends squad include former Palace and Charlton hit-man Mark Bright, England international Warren Barton, and ex-Spurs players Jason Cundy, Micky Hazard, Graham Roberts and Steve Sedgeley.
Dixon, who scored 193 goals in his nine-year spell at Stamford Bridge and won eight England caps, regularly plays in these events and is a big fan of the format.
He said: “The tournaments at the academy are always very well run and everyone thoroughly enjoys themselves. It’s very competitive and all the legends who take part enjoy the games and the banter afterwards.”
Anthony White, marketing manager at the David Beckham Academy, said: “This is a great opportunity to play at the biggest and best indoor football facility in Europe and test yourselves against a team of footballing legends.
"The tournament will find out who the best football team is in Canary Wharf as well as contributing to our chosen charity SHINE [a children’s educational initiative].”
Entry to the tournament costs £1,500 per team and includes food and drink for the evening. Teams consist of eight players and seven supporters.
And you never know, Beckham himself might turn out to make up the numbers and perhaps prove his fitness to England boss Fabio Capello in the process.
