Footballer is star guest at sport awards
EX-ENGLAND footballer Paul Merson will be making a Docklands date this December at Canary Wharf's top sports awards ceremony.
Merson, who enjoyed a glittering career with Arsenal and England, will be guest of honour at the seventh annual Sports Personality Awards, sponsored and hosted by Canary Wharf Group.
The event, to be held at the East Wintergarden in Bank Street, takes place on Saturday, December 1.
Clubs and organisations are now being invited to submit their nominations.
The categories are: Individual Achievement Award/Sports Personality of the Year; Junior Team of the Year; Senior Team of the Year; Group of the Year and Voluntary Commitment Awards. Nominations should include a description of the nominated individual or group and a recent photograph.
Canary Wharf Group community and sports co-ordinator Mimi Tran said: "Young people need all the encouragement that we can give them and it is with this in mind that we hold these awards each year so that individual and team achievement can be recognised and praised, and perhaps even greater things can be targeted and achieved, especially with the London 2012 Olympics fast approaching."
The awards recognise the outstanding contribution to sport by young people and their leaders in Tower Hamlets and Thames Gateway. Last year Morpeth School's 13-year-old table tennis sensation Sally Hoang won the top award. Other winners included Millwall Rugby Club, Docklands Dojo and Docklands Tae Kwon-Do school.
Entries, to be received by 5pm on Friday, October 26, should be sent to: Mimi Tran, Community & Sports Co-ordinator, Canary Wharf Group plc, One Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London E14 5AB.
