Donachie out as the lions hit rock bottom
THE time was finally up for Willie Donachie this Monday (October 8), when following a Board meeting, the club parted company with him.
It was definitely a decision that they were reluctant to make, but in the end a 4-0 defeat at Carlisle sending us to the bottom of League One forced them to make this decision now.
Lions supporters had been quite vocal recently as we expected better things this season and were starting to get increasingly worried about relegation and the detrimental impact that could have on the club's future. The general consensus was that we could not see the current management team getting us comfortably out of trouble so something needed to be done.
At least by making the decision this early in the season the new manager will have some time to turn things round. The only problem is the temporary management team of Richard Shaw and Colin West need to pick up some wins while the Board search for a permanent appointment. Failure to do so will present the new manager with an uphill task.
Past history has seen the temporary managers get some decent results while in charge of Millwall and they were then given the job permanently. But often within a short period of being installed as permanent managers the wheels fell off. This prompts Lions fans to expect a manager with some experience to be appointed this time round.
Finding that experienced manager will be the task of the Board but, inevitably, whoever gets the job will probably not please everyone across our fan base so they will need to get results fairly early in their tenure to win over the doubters. Failure to do so will make the job even more difficult.
Good news is we do have some fairly decent players at the club for the new manager to work with so he probably won't have to make wholesale changes, just add a few key players to get more out of the squad that is currently there.
As a club that loses a pile of money every year, we almost certainly don't have the capability of bringing in a lot of new players anyway.
