Hunt's valley return
THE LAST time most Charlton fans saw Andy Hunt on the pitch, he was scoring goals in the Premiership.
Now the former Addicks striker is looking forward to returning to The Valley as a supporter in what he hopes will be a successful season for Charlton.
Andy is always remembered for spearheading the Addicks' attack when the team won the Division One championship in 2000 before his career was sadly cut short by chronic fatigue syndrome early the following season.
He and his wife then moved to Belize to start up a travel business, and this week, on a brief holiday in England, the 37-year-old told TheWharf of his plans to return to the UK in December when he is keen to revisit to the scene of former glories.
"I'll be living in Brighton for five months and playing a lot of golf," said Andy.
"But one thing I will have to do is take my son Lucas to The Valley. He's only four, so he obviously never saw me play, but it would be fantastic to take him to my old workplace on that pitch in front of 27,000 people."
The club with which he played top flight football is never far away from Andy's thoughts.
With former teammates Chris Powell and Danny Mills now at the Valley, Andy believes the side have a great chance of returning to the Premier League.
"It's important to have players who are established in this division and these two certainly know what it's all about," he said.
"Back when we played together Danny was a quiet lad but he was still quite young.
"Obviously he now has the experience of playing at Manchester City and Leeds, so I imagine he's changed as a person. And although he was quiet, he was never shy in getting stuck in on the pitch, so that will be good for this division.
"And Chris Powell is a very nice fellow. Ever since I've known him he has been respected by everyone. He's got a lot of experience and he'll be a great influence."
As well as life at the Charlton, Andy has fond memories of the lifestyle of living in Greenwich.
"I'm a bit gutted I sold my house because it was really nice, right next to Greenwich Park," he said.
"I used to love going to the village and round Blackheath into the restaurants and the odd bar.
"It's must have gone up in price now with all the transport links."
Since leaving England, Andy has always been keen to give his views on his personal website, which allows the average fan an insight into what life is like for a footballer.
From training to transfers, Andy, who also played for Newcastle and West Brom, speaks candidly on what motivates the modern-day player.
"Friends always used to ask me questions about my life as a footballer, and seeing as I like writing, I started doing this blog," said Andy.
"As a player it's hard to give your views. You just don't want to offend anyone, be it fellow players or managers, so you try to get through an interview without saying anything controversial.
"But now I can write whatever I want." Andy and his wife Simone Angel have been enjoying life in Belize - as well as building up a healthy business, they now have two children - but he said he will spend the time in Brighton thinking about where his future lies.
"We're at a bit of a crossroads at the moment," said Andy. "We've had three or four years working on the business and it looks after itself. But unless there's more construction in the region we cannot really grow.
"The possibility of developing the region is endless, so if anyone has a few million pounds to spare, get in touch with me and we'll build a golf course."
