Design to shine at the film fest
WHARF artists will also be getting a chance to shine at the first Canary Wharf Film Festival next week.
Designers at the Trinity Buoy Wharf arts hub, near East India DLR, will be creating the coveted awards for top-ranked films at the event (September 13-17).
Mosaic maestro Norma Vondee has designed the prize for the winner in the documentary section of the festival, which is supported by The Wharf and being held at Cineworld in West India Qay
The Wapping resident said: "I do a lot of work in west London, but I really believe in east London. I'm very pleased that it's developing, and that I can get involved in more projects in the area. I'm designing a mosaic based on a film frame for the award. It's going to be very decadent and glitzy."
Norma has had a studio in Trinity Buoy Wharf for seven years. She designed the large sculpture outside the Odyssey building off Westferry Road. She was even commissioned to design a Japanese-style waterfall mosaic for the inside of a bath at Mission Impossible 2 star Thandie Newton's Queen's Park home. Norma said: "She was a great client. She was so friendly, and just a lovely woman."
Her website is www.normavondeemosaics.com Fellow Trinity Buoy Wharf artist Liam Ryan will be designing the drama award, just months after arriving in London from Dublin. The painter is a big fan of neo-surrealism, but also dabbles in photography.
He said: "I've never done anything like this before. I'm submitting an abstract piece, an open-ended piece with an element of landscape.
"I'm really still finding my feet in London, but Trinity Buoy Wharf is a very laid-back place."
Kerry Houghton is the designer of the animation award. The Greenwich-based painter will be previewing her exhibition at the Found Gallery in Trinity Buoy Wharf next Thursday (September 13). Her work is shown on her website at www.kerrylhoughton.net
All members are part of the Creative Wharf community, which is the official creative partner of the festival. Event director Olivia Bellas said: "With art and media crossing over as much as it does these days, we also wanted to showcase local creative talent through these bespoke awards.
"The Creative Wharf is a positive, community-inspired network and as one of the winners it's also nice to know you've won a unique award that no one else has."
