Crunch time for global warming
SNACK-GUZZLERS are used to finding salt sachets and special prizes in their crisp packets.
But how often have you found a chart single? Environmentally-friendly electro-rock band ReCoup have found a new use for their snack packets by recycling them as CD sleeves for their new single Remind You.
The four-piece act, which boasts two members from the Isle of Dogs, hand-washed packets collected from family and friends before reversing and labelling them.
The foil-packaged single will be available next month, and has already broken into the country's club top 40 chart.
Vocalist and keyboardist Pieter Theron, of Manchester Road, said: "We have very strong feelings on environmental issues. We've released our single in this way to make a point about recycling.
"Crisp packets are made from a foil which is hard to recycle, so we found a good use for them."
The single itself is attracting as much interest as its odd packaging. Jukebox described Remind You as "intelligent, retro music, somewhere between U2 and Air", while PopJustice made the "amazing" track its single of the day.
It reached number 27 this week in the Official UK Club Charts, which ranks tracks according to how often they are played in clubs. Pieter said:
"We were pretty happy about that, and we're hopeful that it will go up from its current spot."
ReCoup were formed officially in 2004, and also feature former West Ham residents Mat Wood on guitar and drummer Alida Stadler. Video DJ Majken Moller also lives in Manchester Road.
The band have played at venues such as Madame Jojo's and Cafe de Paris in Soho and jetted off on a tour of Poland last month.
They will be closing their summer residency at Leonards in Clerkenwell tomorrow from 9.30pm, and will appear in Canary Wharf's Green Canary Day on October 9.
Pieter said: "People enjoy dancing to the band because we mix electronic beeps and beats with real guitars and drums. We have influences ranging from Radiohead and Depeche Mode to Sigur Ros and Bjork."
Remind You and album ReCoup d'Etat will be available on pre-release from www.amazon.co.uk and www.hmv.co.uk
