Charging 'won't solve' congestion problem: campaigners
ANTI-CONGESTION charging protesters in Greenwich are holding a series of public meetings about the proposals.
The Association of British Drivers (ABD) will highlight its fight against the 'attack on motorists' at its first meeting on Saturday, September 22.
In February, The Wharf reported how commuters could face a charge of up to #6 for using the Blackwall Tunnel approach road.
The proposal was among options designed to cut traffic growth in Greenwich, including a town centre charging zone, put to residents in a Transport for London poll.
Roger Lawson, the ABD's London region co-ordinator, said: "We are opposed to the Greenwich proposals because basically it's a tax and it doesn't solve the congestion problem.
"In our view, it will just be a way of raising money from motorists. It won't solve the problem. It doesn't solve the problem in central London."
A Greenwich Council spokesman said the results of the survey were expected soon and no new schemes would be passed without public consultation.
* The first ABD meeting will be held at Mycenae House, 90 Mycenae Road, Blackheath at 11am next Saturday, September 22.
