Battling back to the cat walk
JUST a week after her 26th birthday Natasha Allen was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Two years on and the Citigroup worker has made a full recovery but fears other young women might not be aware of the risks.
Now she has signed up to take part in the Breast Cancer Care Fashion Show in which people who have had breast cancer will model the latest designer outfits.
Natasha, a trade support supervisor at Citigroup's Canada Square offices, initially went to see the company's doctor after finding a lump in her breast.
She said: "The next day I was in Harley Street having a biopsy. When the results came back they told me it was positive - I had cancer. It was a massive shock. I didn't know what was going on. It was a Tuesday and I had the operation on the Thursday."
Surgeons gave Natasha the all-clear after her lumpectomy. She had 18 weeks of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiotherapy and was lucky enough to keep her hair after wearing an innovative 'cold cap' during treatment. She said:
"Colleagues at Citigroup were really supportive. My department has done a couple of fundraisers and I did an abseil at Canary Wharf. We raised #16,000."
Natasha, from Bexleyheath, hopes her experience will encourage other young women to be more health-conscious.
"People are so shocked that someone of my age has been there and done that," she said. "The whole time I was going to appointments the nurses would come over to my mum. I used to have to say 'No, I'm Natasha'. People immediately assume that young people don't get breast cancer and young women just don't think about it, but they should."
Natasha will be hitting the catwalk at the glittering fashion show, sponsored by Swarovski, at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane on October 3. The jeweller has specially created two products with all proceeds going to Breast Cancer Care, including a #190 parallele pendant which has been updated in pink crystal for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
